# What are rewards and the types of rewards
Rewards are what members can claim with their points. Without rewards worth saving for, there's little reason to join, so make sure you have a good selection ready at launch.
You create rewards yourself under **Program \> My Rewards \> Create reward**. This is also where you edit or delete existing rewards. You'll usually find a few default rewards already set up during onboarding. Use them as examples, tweak them or delete them.
Types of rewards
There are five types of rewards. Choose the type based on the value of the reward and how it's redeemed.

| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **On-site reward** | Members redeem the reward on the spot at your location. | Small rewards, like a free drink, a small upgrade or a product handed over at the desk | Calculated automatically | The member taps Claim in the app. A staff member confirms it with a QR code (scanned using the admin login) or a swipe. | **Manual fulfilment** | A reward that isn't redeemed on the spot. | More expensive rewards, like a higher-value product, where you want to be sure everything goes smoothly | Calculated automatically | The member claims it in the app. You get an email and then arrange with the member how they'll receive it. |
| **Birthday reward** | Members automatically get a reward around their birthday. You decide how long it stays valid. | A personal treat | None, it's a gift | The member claims it within the period you choose: up to 7 days after their birthday, on the day itself or in the same month. A staff member confirms the redemption on site with a QR code or a swipe, just like an on-site reward. |
| **Voucher** | A discount code that members claim and use later, for example in your booking or POS system. | A discount on a next booking or purchase, for example 20% | You set them yourself | The member claims it in the app and gets a discount code: either a unique code from the file you uploaded, or a multi-use code that's the same for everyone. The member enters the code when booking or paying. |
| **Gift** | A free reward members claim without spending points: something physical or a voucher code. For the voucher gift, please use voucher instead and set points to 0. You can limit it by stock, by time period or both. | A launch promotion, for example: the first 50 members to open the loyalty programme in the app get a free drink | Always 0 | The member claims it in the app while the gift is available: until it runs out (if you set a stock) or within the period you set under Schedule. For a physical gift, a staff member confirms the redemption on site with a QR code or a swipe, just like an on-site reward. Once the stock runs out or the period ends, the gift disappears from the app. |
Tips for your rewards
- **Start with at least seven rewards.** That gives members enough choice at launch.
- **Spread the points.** Have rewards that new members can claim quickly, plus pricier ones your regulars can save up for.
- **Think about redemption.** Not always someone on staff? Lean towards manual fulfilment rather than on-site rewards.
- **A reward doesn't have to be expensive.** An exclusive item that takes a lot of points to claim can become a status symbol among your members.
