# Segments

Segments let you create groups of customers you can target or reward. You can use segments to:

- send targeted campaigns to a specific group;
- offer rewards, bonus rules or manual points to a particular group only;
- compare how different groups behave in your analytics.

Think of customers who haven't been in for a while, people who attended a specific event, or new members.

Two segments are set up by default: **Non-members** (customers who aren't loyalty members) and **Loyalty members** (everyone in your loyalty programme). Use the **All**, **Dynamic**, **Static** and **Archived** tabs to filter the list. For each segment you'll see how many contacts it contains, what percentage of your contacts that is and how often the segment is used.

You can create a segment from a template or build one yourself. You can also let AI build a segment for you.

**1. From a template**

Click **Choose a template**. You'll see ready-made segments, which you can narrow down to loyalty members or non-members using the filter at the top:

- **At risk customers / At risk members:** customers or members who haven't booked in the last 30 days.
- **VIP customers / VIP members:** the 10% of customers or members with the highest total spend.

Each template shows roughly how big the segment is expected to be. Select one or more templates and click **Create**. You can still adjust the conditions afterwards.

**2. Building a segment yourself**

Click **Create a segment**. Enter a name and, optionally, a description, and choose the type of segment:

- **Dynamic segment:** you set conditions and contacts move in and out of the segment automatically as they start or stop meeting them. Handy for groups that keep changing, like "customers who've visited in the last 30 days".
- **Static segment:** you choose exactly which contacts are in it. Handy for a fixed group, like the attendees of an event or a list of ambassadors.

*Dynamic segment*

Under **Segment conditions**, set one or more conditions. First choose a property, for example **Last visit date**, then an operator, for example **Is within the last**, and then a value, for example 30 (days). Use **Add condition** to add more. At the bottom you'll immediately see how many contacts the segment is expected to include. Click **Create** to save the segment.

Properties are grouped into categories, such as Personal (for example date of birth, age and marketing consent), Loyalty, Bookings and visits, Spend and Loyalty app. Properties with a padlock, such as Campaign engagement, Memberships and Custom properties, are available with a package that includes CRM.

*With AI*

Under Create segment, click **Create with AI** and describe in plain language who you want to reach, for example: "Customers who've booked at least 3 times in the last 60 days, but not in the last 14 days." You can also pick an example, like High-value customers, Frequent bookers or At risk. Click **Generate segment**.

![Creating a segment with AI](https://welcome.authic.io/hubfs/CS%20Knowledgebase/054-creating-a-segment-with-ai.png)

The AI chooses the segment type and sets up the conditions for you. At the top you'll see an explanation of how the conditions are built. Check the conditions, tweak them where needed and click **Create**.

*Static segment*

Under **Select members**, search for and tick the contacts you want to add. On the right you'll see a preview of the selected members. Got a list of, say, tournament, event or workshop attendees? Click **Upload a sheet** and upload an Excel or CSV file with their email addresses. Members are matched on their email address. Click **Create** to save the segment.
