# Automations
Automations let you reach customers automatically at the right moment. You set up an automation once and it runs by itself from then on. That keeps customers engaged and saves you manual work.
Every automation is made up of a few steps:
- **Trigger:** the moment the automation starts, for example when a customer hasn't bought anything for 30 days.
- **Audience:** who the automation applies to, for example all contacts or a specific segment.
- **Action:** what happens, for example just sending a message or a message with an offer.
- **Message:** the push notification and/or email the customer receives.
**Choose a template**
You start with one of the ready-made templates. Each template has a suggested flow and messages you can review and edit before activating it:
- **Win back inactive members:** re-engage customers who haven't been in for a while, before you lose them.
- **Turn customers into members:** invite customers to your loyalty programme after a booking.
- **Welcome new loyalty members:** send a welcome message or gift when someone joins.
- **Celebrate members birthdays:** send members a message or gift on their birthday.
Click **Use template** on the template you want. More templates are on the way, along with the option to build your own automations.
**Setting up an automation**
1. Under **Automation details**, the name and description are already filled in. Change them if you like.
2. **Automation Flow** shows every step of the automation in order: trigger, audience, action, the messages and the end of the automation. Click the pencil icon on a step to edit it, for example after how many days the trigger fires, which segment the automation applies to or the text of the push notification. For the email, this opens the email editor (see Editing the email under Manual campaigns).
3. Everything is pre-filled from the template, including a default email design. Go through each step and then click **Save**. The automation is saved as a paused draft, so you only activate it once everything's right.
